After playing in the Eastern Conference Final in 2020 and ‘21, the New York Islanders had several frustrating factors out of their control lead to a difficult 2021-22 season: they played on the road for the first five weeks while UBS Arena was completed, and the team was hit hard by a COVID-19 outbreak. Despite not changing much on the ice, coach Barry Trotz was swapped out with top assistant Lane Lambert. Defenseman Alex Romanov was brought in to tighten up that part of the game, and the core of Mathew Barzal, Brock Nelson, Anders Lee, and goaltender Ilya Sorokin all return with the expectations of returning to the form of recent years.
