The Jets started building a solid foundation with head coach Robert Saleh and quarterback Zach Wilson in their rookie years in those positions, including a win over the eventual AFC champion Cincinnati Bengals. Cornerback D.J. Reed was brought in to help the defense, and Saleh is familiar with him from their time in San Francisco. Tight ends Tyler Conklin and C.J. Uzomah were also brought in to help Wilson and the offense. New York also added three pieces in the first round of the draft: cornerback Sauce Gardner from Cincinnati, wide receiver Garrett Wilson of Ohio State, and linebacker Jermaine Johnson from Florida State.
